Best AWS Courses for Beginners: A Practical Learning Path

Where to start learning AWS — official free training, certification prep and hands-on practice — plus a learning path that avoids common beginner mistakes.

By Published 2 min read

AWS is the largest cloud platform and one of the most in-demand skills in software engineering, DevOps and data engineering. It's also intimidating: hundreds of services, a dense console and a pricing model that can surprise beginners.

The good news is that you don't need to learn everything. This guide covers where to learn, what to learn first and how to practise without running up a bill.

Where to learn AWS

A beginner learning path

  1. Cloud fundamentals. What regions and availability zones are, the shared-responsibility model, and how AWS billing works.
  2. IAM. Users, roles and policies. Almost every AWS mistake eventually traces back to IAM, so learn it early.
  3. Core services. EC2 (virtual machines), S3 (object storage), VPC (networking basics) and RDS (managed databases).
  4. Deploy something real. Host a static site on S3 behind CloudFront, or run a small app on EC2 or Lightsail.
  5. Infrastructure as code. Rebuild what you made using CloudFormation, AWS CDK or Terraform.
  6. Serverless. Lambda, API Gateway and DynamoDB — a different way of building that AWS is known for.
  7. Choose a certification. Cloud Practitioner for a broad foundation, or Solutions Architect – Associate for a more technical target.

Courses vs hands-on practice

Courses give you a map; practice builds the skill. A good rule of thumb is to spend at least as much time building as watching. After each module, close the video and recreate what you saw from memory, then break it and fix it.

Studying for a certification: pros

  • Pro: Gives your learning a clear structure and deadline
  • Pro: Widely recognised by employers and recruiters
  • Pro: Forces you to cover areas you might otherwise skip

Studying for a certification: cons

  • Con: Possible to pass with exam technique rather than real skill
  • Con: Exam fees and paid prep material add up
  • Con: Certifications expire and need renewing

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn AWS for free?

You can learn a great deal for free. AWS Skill Builder includes free digital courses, and AWS's documentation and workshops are free. Paid courses mainly add structure, exam preparation and guided labs.

Which AWS certification should a beginner take first?

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is the foundational certification and a common first step, especially for non-engineers. Many developers go straight to the Solutions Architect – Associate, which is more technical and more widely requested in job listings.

How do I avoid a surprise AWS bill while learning?

Set up a billing budget and alerts on day one, enable multi-factor authentication on your root account, delete resources when you finish a lab, and check which services are covered by the AWS Free Tier before using them.
